A Designer's Opinion | Photoshop VS Canva

Updated: May 17, 2022

Canva and Photoshop are two of the more popular design software’s available to us nowadays each offering sightly different uses and overall are aimed at slightly different audiences. But why as a designer should you use Photoshop, and NOT CANVA.

Canva is great tool for someone who doesn’t know loads about the design world or programs and doesn’t have the time to spend becoming a beginner designer, but it does have its limitations, if you want to create more professional skilled pieces of work Photoshop’s vast range of tools and features makes Canva’s look like child’s play. Canva also limits its user by only being available with internet access which for many is fine, but when you’re out and about trying to get work done by the deadline not having internet can sometimes be the case and could be real issue if you haven’t planned for this.

If you are getting into design to take up graphic design as a profession Photoshop is an obvious choice and that’s why I use it, it’s the leading program in the professional market and employers are looking for skilled designers in Photoshop. What program you choose to specialise in can determine your professional opportunities. In saying that, if you’re a Photoshop professional I believe you could pick up Canva like very easily. If you want to learn a design program that could help you in your career Photoshop is the one to learn right now, and it doesn’t look like its going to be dethroned anytime soon. Photoshop isn’t as user friendly but with so many video tutorials for beginners, many which you can find on YouTube and this site. If you can’t find what you're looking for send me an email through the ABOUT me section and I’ll try and make a video for you guys on it. These videos have made learning photoshop so much easier nowadays, breaking down that barrier to entry that made newcomers to the program intimidated by its vast and complex functions.

Price is a big downside of Photoshop, and it stops a lot of people using it, where as Canva’s lite version is completely free for anyone to use. If you are a bit of a tech wiz you can find ways to get Photoshop for free via cracked versions although I don’t recommend this, as you may accidently give your computer a virus and Adobe charges for their products so they can continue improving them for their users. Additional note to this, if you are a student Adobe does offer student plans for their creative suite and if you're a student, I strongly recommend picking this up as it can really save you some money.

Conclusion

Canva has its place in the design world and community, if it’s the program which you currently use, like and produce high quality work through, keep doing you. However, Photoshop for me is the clear victor in this battle, it has higher functionality, is more widely recognised for work, connects with adobe cloud (if you have the modern version) and many more reasons I haven’t named. At the end of the day if you’re producing any sort of design work, it doesn’t matter what program you use as long as you’re enjoying what you’re doing.
